Nashville trekking company heads to Mt. Everest with shoe donation and ‘fun run’ for Nepali children
Group imbarks on two-week trek March 30
Nashville: Hobnail Trekking Co., an adventure travel company based in the Nashville suburb of Kingston Springs, is leading a group of hikers on a two-week trek to Mount Everest Base Camp in Nepal beginning March 30. After arriving in Kathmandu, the team will set out from the village of Lukla on a 70-mile round-trip journey to the base of the world’s tallest peak. As part of the trip, Hobnail has teamed with a Florida non-profit organization, The Shuzz Foundation, to deliver more than 350 pairs of new sneakers to school children in Kathmandu and the tiny village of Phakding. Both areas were ravaged by the catastrophic 2015 earthquake that killed nearly 9,000 people.
“One of our team members, Luis Prieto, is a board member with Shuzz and approached us with the idea,” says Hobnail Trekking Co. owner Mark Johnson. “Being able to provide some type of assistance to these kids — even with a simple pair of sneakers — is fantastic. It may seem commonplace to most Americans, but a functioning pair of shoes is life-changing for people who don’t have them. Even three years later, Nepali folks continue to struggle with the consequences of the earthquake and still need help.”
As part of the shoe distribution event in Phakding — the first night’s stop for the 15 trekkers — Hobnail team member and Nashville native Steve Tudor has organized a one-mile fun run for the shoe recipients, complete with official run bibs provided by the Nashville Striders running club.
“We thought it would be fun and incredibly memorable, both for us and these children,” says Tudor, an avid marathoner and Nashville Striders board member. “On a personal note, I just want to be able to say that I ran in the Himalayas! It will only add to the one-in-a-lifetime quality of this adventure. We appreciate the help of Nashville Striders.”
Johnson says the event will be chronicled via Hobnail’s social media platforms found at the company’s website at www.hobnailtrekkingco.com.
